The cables themselves were still intact, so we build a new cable jacket and at the same time made the cables fire resistant with the use of FS 5 coating. The job was later approved by ABS as the rig’s class body. Due to a serious fire in the generator room on KS Drilling’s Jack Up rig Java Star in 2014, the cable jackets were all damaged. The rig is under contract for Pertamina, in the North Java Sea near Madura.
This is the process Fire Security use to repair damaged cables and make them fire resistant with the use of our FS 5 cable coating:
- Remove the damaged outer sheath.
- Clean cables.
- Apply linerless rubber tape to all damaged cables.
- Apply a thick layer of coating, then a fiber mesh for additional
mechanical strength. - Let the coating dry and cure for 24 hours.
- Apply a second layer of FS-5 coating.
- After another 24 hours rest, apply the last layer FS coating.
- Cable repair finished.
In a letter of recommendation from KS Java Star, Rig Manager Mahmood Al-Bayafi says:
“The work done by Fire Security effectively prevented extensive rig downtime as all cables were repaired while energized. No electricity shutdown was required during the work or as a result of the work. This has greatly extended the lifetime of the cables and they are now functioning as they were before the incident. The work was performed in a cost-effective and timely manner.”
